Jean-Claude Juncker Received Vision for Europe Award from Edmond Israel Foundation

The Edmond Israel Foundation hosted a conference on Europe on 19 October 1998 attended by high level government officials, ambassadors and senior executives. At the conference, HE Mr Jean-Claude Juncker, Prime Minister of Luxembourg, received the Edmond Israel Foundation - Vision for Europe Award, a sculpture by Mr Lucien Wercollier.

In the presence of HE Mr Lionel Jospin, the Prime Minister of France, Mr André Lussi, Chairman of the Edmond Israel Foundation, provided an insight into the success of Europe in a globalising world, using the theme 'Knowledge and Entrepreneurship'.

Mr Edmond Israel outlined the rationale for the 'Vision for Europe Award' and provided an overview of HE Mr Jean-Claude Juncker's contribution to Europe, explaining why he has been chosen as this year's recipient. He commented: 'Jean-Claude Juncker is a statesman with a vision, a vision of how the world must evolve. He is determined to develop and implement a strategy for the future. He has always been and will continue to be one of the architects of the 21st century, the European century'.

The conference included my 'My Vision for Europe Award', presented by a student from the Lycée Robert Schuman. He said: 'My Vision for Europe is that of a humanist group of nations, regions, people who, in the pursuit of happiness, have deliberately chosen peace instead of war, unity instead of insularity, tolerance instead of prejudice'.

André Lussi, Chairman of the Foundation, commented: 'HE Jean-Claude Juncker is an outstanding choice. His political influence and considerable efforts have significantly contributed to European unity, further building on Luxembourg's historic role in the construction of the European Union'.

The Edmond Israel Foundation was created on 19 September 1990 in honour of the founding Chairman of Cedel International, Edmond Israel. The Foundation is a non-profit making organisation which aims to support and promote research and study on the securities industry by way of providing financial assistance and scholarship to promising individuals. The 'Vision for Europe' award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding achievement and contribution to Europe. Last year's recipient was HE Mr. Helmut Kohl. HE Mr. Jacques Santer, President of the European Commission, was the first to receive the Award.
